Moore Reading

Title: Kin Island
Author: Jaiki Pitt and Terri Janke

Plot Summary (no spoilers): Jake is more interested in playing video games than listening to his mum talk about her family history.  But a family holiday to Thursday Island in the Torres Strait Islands changes that for Jake as he begins to discover the awesome connections his family has to T.I. and its history.  When a cyclone warning is announced, Jake is so determined to do a favour for his Nanna JJ that he takes a risk and does something dangerous.  Will Jake be okay?  Or will this risk be too much?

Your Review: I enjoyed reading this short story.  It was easy to relate to the characters since I’ve been on lots of family holidays to new and interesting places. Discovering some facts about the Torres Strait Islands and World War II as well as the importance of land and Country for Indigenous Australians is made really easy in this book.

Target audience: 9-14 year olds

Rating: 2.5/5 stars
