Students will be undertaking a Student Wellbeing Survey in their classrooms over the next two weeks. This was due to be undertaken in March however the COVID-19 crisis had a major impact on student’s attendance at school, which made it challenging for some schools to complete the survey at this time. The survey will provide valuable data on the wellbeing of our students post-COVID and identify key issues that may need addressing such as worries and their connectedness to school. This will help inform school planning. In 2021 the Student Wellbeing Survey will return to the annual collection in March for all schools. Notes have gone home. Please let us know if you DO NOT want your child to undertake the survey.
Sadly incidents of bullying happen in every school. Cyber bullying is also common anywhere a young person has a phone, and this often happens in their bedrooms at night. This week Louise Rose has led assemblies in Years 7 and 8, educating our young people around the power of the bystander. During a bullying incident the bully is seeking attention from bystanders, either through bystander encouragement or through passive acceptance. The bystander, therefore, plays a powerful role either in promoting or preventing bullying even without knowing it. Through this assembly we are showing our young people how they can be helpful bystanders through direct intervention such as standing up for the victim, or indirectly by seeking teacher help.
As I write this newsletter, our Year 10’s are finishing exams. Congratulations to all Year 10’s on their focus to do their best. Year 10’s have a busy few weeks ahead as they have orientation days at Newstead College and Launceston College as well as considering other options for continuing their education next year. Other options include studying agriculture at Lilydale District High, tourism at Prospect High and construction at Kings Meadows High as well as TAFE. At Brooks we are offering a range of EAL courses next year. This is a new and different way of thinking and working for our Year 10 students across Launceston as their choices are extended. Students can also have shared enrolments in a high school and college setting. I encourage all our Year 10’s to consider all the options available to them and our Year 10 teachers are here to support them.

Food Technology - Carving Carrots
Senior Food Technology students tried their hand at food carving as part of their unit on Japanese cuisine. Food carving is done to a very high standard in Japan, and used widely when presenting dishes, both in homes and restaurants. As the photos below show, our students were very successful in completing the challenge of carving roses from carrots. Fantastic effort from everyone! Carol Marshall
Mrs Frerk’s Year 8 cooking class did an ‘Egg Challenge’ last Wednesday. Students had to choose a cooking method for eggs and create a dish using the method they selected. Following are their final products. Mrs Ashley Frerk
Last Friday our Student Leaders hosted Pyjama Day. This is the first time we have held this since 2016. We were able to raise close to $200 for The Pyjama Foundation who support young people in foster care.
We appreciate everyone who donated and dressed down for this cause.
Students who donated have gone into a draw for a prize which will be announced at our next school assembly.

STAS Eligibility Changes
The Tasmanian Government has announced the expansion of the Student Assistance Scheme (STAS), which waives the cost of Tasmanian Government levies for eligible students, for the 2021 school year onwards.
The eligibility for STAS will move to using the Health Care Card or equivalent as the assessment mechanism, replacing previous income thresholds that applied.
A set of Frequently Asked Questions has been developed to assist with any questions you may have.
Further questions about STAS or Levies and Charges in general can be sent to the Department of Education’s Financial Services Unit at stas@education.tas.gov.au or by calling 1800 827 055.
Students in our school have been invited to take part in a wellbeing survey conducted in Term 3 2020. We are doing this as part of the Department of Education’s 2018 – 2021 Child and Student Wellbeing Strategy.
Young people’s sense of wellbeing is an important part of how they learn at school. The purpose of the survey is to seek students’ views about their wellbeing and their engagement with school. Students in Years 4 to 12 will be invited to participate in the Student Wellbeing Survey. The information collected will help our school, the Department of Education and our school community to support young people’s wellbeing.
The survey asks students about their social and emotional wellbeing; school relationships and engagement and learning in school; physical health and wellbeing; and after school activities. Students’ answers will be kept confidential – no one (including school staff) will use the results to identify individual students.
Teachers will arrange for students to undertake the survey during class time. Students will be asked if they would like to participate and are able to withdraw at any time. If you do not want your child to participate, please complete the form sent home with students.
An information letter has been sent home with all students on Tuesday 25 August with further information about the survey.
