Some COVID19 protocols still in place include limiting adult visitors to school and supporting a stop and drop approach when dropping off and picking up children. This means that parents, sadly, are still not invited onto school grounds as spectators for sports events or assemblies. We are required to keep an online record at the office for any visitors. Extra cleaning and protocols around washing hands and the use of sanitiser is continuing across the school. We have begun planning for end of year events for Year 10’s including a celebration week of activities, our dinner and our assemblies. Sadly, due to COVID19 no camps are happening this year and there are still restrictions on work experiences for students.
Poor attendance has been a real concern for some of our students. School attendance matters. Students need to attend school each day to succeed. Research says that poor attendance limits student’s choices later in life. Non- attendance has a negative effect on students, both academically and socially. Absenteeism can increase social isolation, including alienation and lack of engagement with the school community and peers, leading to emotional and behavioural difficulties.
School attendance is mandatory and parents and guardians are legally required to ensure their children attend a formal education system. Parents are also legally required to inform the school if their child is not able to attend. Sending the school an sms message to inform us that your child is away is a great way to inform the school and I thank those parents who are already doing this. Our school number is 63247200 and ringing to let us know would also be appreciated.
If there is something we can do at school to support your child’s attendance please ring and we will do what we can to support your child.

In Child Studies, we have been studying pregnancy. Students (and staff) had the opportunity to try on the Pregnancy Profile Simulator which replicates the third trimester of pregnancy. They experienced a weight gain of 11-13kg as well as an elevated body temperature. We are also studying labour. While enjoying some fruit for morning tea, students learnt about cervical dilation which was represented using different sized fruits.
Ms Bel Mackrill
Students from our Tourism Studies class participated in an excursion to local tourism attractions around Northern Tasmania. Students visited the Beaconsfield Mine and Heritage Centre and learned about the township’s rich history and the dramatic 2006 rock fall and rescue. We were fortunate to have a guided tour from a representative of the West Tamar Council who gave students an insight into how tourism impacts on the local community.
Students then visited the Low Head Pilot Station and Lighthouse and even managed to see a few penguins!

Pyjama Day is happening on Friday, 21 August at Brooks. We ask that students and staff dress in their pyjamas for the day and make a coin donation to support young children living in foster care. For everyone who wears pyjamas and donates, they will receive a raffle ticket to go into the draw to win a prize which will be announced at the whole school assembly.
There will also be a free bbq lunch during big break.
Please note for students who have Options classes this day, appropriate footwear needs to be worn for these classes.

Child Studies will be holding Red Nose Day on Friday, 28 August. This is a day held annually to acknowledge and raise funds and awareness for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), stillborn babies and fatal sleeping accidents.
What students can do to support:
- Wear red for a gold coin donation (Hot chips for the Year who raises the most money)
- Buy merchandise from the office
- Buy a cupcake or jelly cake from the cooking block on the day.
Merchandise will be available from week 5.
Thank you for your support.
Miss Mackrill
