It has been wonderful to return to our ‘new normal’ for BHS this term. We are so incredibly fortunate that Tasmania is in such a strong position through its management of the coronavirus meaning that our daily lives are able to return, for the most part, to normality. As for all Tasmanian schools we have a Covid-19 management plan in place and our staff are familiar with the DoE expectations. All visitors to our school must complete a Visitor Health Screening, at our school office, before they are permitted to enter any part of our school grounds. We continue to ask students and visiting adults who are sick to stay at home. Please let the school know if your child is away due to illness.
Please remember if you require any clarification around COVID-19 the best source of information is the DoE Intranet - https://tasedu.sharepoint.com/sites/intranet/SitePages/Coronavirus.aspx
Term 3 sees many school events return to our calendars, this includes:
- A return to Wednesday afternoon sport. This year we will be fielding 3 netball teams, 3 soccer teams and our football team. Unfortunately the NHSSA is not allowing spectators at this time;
- Our School Cross Country will be happening Week 3, Friday 7 August;
- The North East Cup with the first event being held at BHS Week 4, Friday 14 August;
- Our first tourism excursion to the Beaconsfield Mine and Low Head Pilot Station, Week 4, Tuesday 11 August;
- Our first full school assembly since March, Week 7 Friday 4 September.
BHS will be offering some students the opportunity to remain with us for Year 11/12 as part of the Department of Education’s Extension Schools Policy. English as an Additional Language (EAL) Senior Secondary Campus @ Brooks will begin in 2021. This Designed Learning Program has been specifically created for young people arriving in Tasmania from other parts of the world who have had little experience with formal education and are adjusting to living in a new country. Our program provides our learners the opportunity to study at a pace suited to their unique circumstances whilst linking in with external support agencies and connecting to primary services. Current Year 10 EAL students will have the opportunity to enrol at our campus next year. If you would like further information about this program please ask to speak with Ms Sue Jacobs, one of our EAL staff.
I would also like to thank our cleaners and grounds staff for preparing our school grounds over the school holidays; they look so very neat and tidy.
Kind Regards
Louise Rose (Acting Principal)

Our Student Leaders are passionate about bringing positive change to our school community.
One of their major projects for 2020 is to make our school more environmentally friendly. They are currently investigating ways in which the school can reduce its use of plastics and making recycling options more accessible across each learning space and Café.
With the support of two of our local politicians, Bass MP Bridget Archer and Windermere MLC Ivan Dean, they have both generously made a cash donation to our Student Leaders to enable our Leaders to investigate options and purchase items to support reducing plastics and promoting recycling.
Bridget Archer along with Trish Haeusler from Plastic Free Launceston, spoke with our Student Leaders about ways the Leaders can make a positive difference. Mrs Archer was also able to present her cheque to our school.
We thank Bridget Archer, Trish Haeusler and Ivan Dean for supporting our project and look forward to sharing more details with you about this.
